LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) – A Lubbock nightclub is temporarily shut down after a weekend shooting. Police said a teenager opened fire at Daiquiri Lounge in the lower Depot District around 2:03 Sunday morning, killing one and injuring five others.

Police arrested and charged 19-year-old Renne Valencia with murder for shooting 22 year-old Zachary Matta several times in the head, neck and chest. Valencia sits behind bars in the Lubbock County Jail awaiting arraignment.

"To see all his blood there, I didn't think it was going to be this bad. But it is. I can just be happy he's in a better place now," said Zachary's cousin Louisa Guerrero crying.

Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission issued an emergency summary suspension for Daiquiri Lounge, closing their doors for seven days while the investigation is underway. During this time, TABC will determine whether the shooting could have been prevented or if it was out of their hands.

"That's what we look at, did they handle it properly, was it beyond there control to handle it, or was it something they could or should have control," said TABC, Sergeant Michael Lockhart.

Police said a fight took place inside the bar, the suspect then left the club, got a gun, came back and shot at Zachary Matta - just two days after his 22nd birthday.

Authorities said Valencia also shot bouncer O. C. Clark near the ankle, 33-year-old Raymond Maldonado in the forearm and 25-year-old Patrick Rodriquez in the leg. 22-year-old Rebecca Flores was hit by a ricocheted bullet and 21-year-old Anthony Guzman was attacked with a brick. A nearby police officer then chased two suspects Renee and Luis Valencia.

"The suspect was about to use deadly force against her. So fearing for her safety, as well as the safety behind her she decided to direct deadly force and fire several shots at the suspect," said Lubbock Police Department Lieutenant, Neal Barron.

Both suspects were arrested near 32nd and Avenue N. Renee Valencia is charged with murder pending five counts of aggregating assault and Luis Valencia is charged with two counts of evading police using a vehicle and on foot.

"The investigation is ongoing. As you can remember at that time in the morning how many people were outside at the various clubs located at that vicinity. So investigators have numerous people, witnesses to talk and get statements from. So it's going to take a while for us to shuffle through," said Barron.

While TABC and LPD continue to investigate the murder, friends and family continue to mourn the loss of their loved one, known as "Big Zach", placing roses, candles and other items.

"I love my cousin and he didn't deserve to die the way he did. Justice needs to be served," said Guerrero holding back tears.

Although the gun was not used inside the bar this incident brings to light the issue of guns in bars. Texas law states any place having 51 percent or more of their sales from alcohol means no one can have a gun inside the bar or nightclub even with a concealed weapons permit. If someone does bring one in TABC said they face third degree felony charges.
