Melissa Duncan named Middle School Science Teacher of the Year

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Melissa Duncan, a Local science teacher from Frenship ISD, has been named Texas Middle School Science Teacher of the Year by the Science Teacher Association of Texas.

Duncan is in her 11th year teaching and her second year at Frenship Middle School. She currently teaches 6th grade science, 8th grade science lab as well as the after-school robotics program at Frenship Middle School. Duncan also assists the District as a homebound tutor.

Duncan currently serves on Frenship I.S.D.'s District Improvement Committee and has received numerous educational grants from organizations including Donors Choose, Horace Mann, Lubbock Area Foundation, and Texas Tech Howard Hughes Medical Institute.

Prior to being named the STAT Middle School Teacher of the Year, Duncan was presented with the Innovative Teacher Award by Texas Tech CISER and HHMI in 2007 and the Region XVII Secondary Teacher of the Year in 2009.

Duncan will be honored at the annual Conference for the Advancement of Science Teaching for being instrumental in improving science education in schools.
