Nancy and Floyd Williams are retiring. So, they want to make sure their home is ready as well. American Innerspring Mattress company offers a free quiz, that allows you to rate your home. Repairing things now, can allow seniors to enjoy their retirement safely. Floyd says, "It called to our attention some things we were good at and things we had already taken care of, but it made us aware of the things we needed to do."
|Take the Home Retirement Quiz|
One item, the Williams scored low on was their bed. Aims Director Arthur Grehen suggests sleeping on a mattress that is less than ten years old. "If you wake up with a sore back or cranky in the morning, odds are that you're sleeping on a mattress that's not giving you the comfort and sleep support you need." Points are also deducted for water or air mattresses.
The next item on the list is lighting. Seniors need adequate lighting inside and outside the house. The quiz subtracts five points for a stairwell without switches at both ends but adds ten points for automatic outdoor lightning. Floyd says, "We've provided for lighting outside because we know people who have fallen leaving or entering homes because of poor lighting."
The quiz also suggests turning the thermostat to anywhere between 60 to 72 degrees Fahrenheit. Experts suggest we sleep best at those temperatures and seniors need a good night's sleep.
As you're going through your home, don't forget to check the kitchen for proper lightening. The book also suggests switching heavy pots and pans for lighter ones. These are all tips, that the Williams's say will help them have a safe and enjoyable retirement. Floyd says, "You spend more time in your home than any other place so you want to feel comfortable, you want to feel safe.
