Lubbock's 17th Annual Juneteenth Celebration wrapped up Saturday with a parade at Mae Simmons Community Center. The celebration began Thursday to commemorate the end of slavery in Texas. On June 19, 1865, Texas slaves learned they were free.
Lubbock residents came together this week to reflect and rejoice in the achievement African Americans have made in education and self improvement. Juneteenth became an official Texas holiday in 1980.
