LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - The health department reports an increase in the number of Shigellosis cases in Lubbock county.   Shigellosis is a diarrhea illness caused by bacteria, and commonly effects children under the age of ten.

A statement from the City of Lubbock does not say specifically how many cases have been reported recently.  It says, "There has been an increase in the number of Shigellosis cases reported in Lubbock County within the last three weeks."

Two years ago the city had an outbreak of Shigellosis, with the number of reported cases being times higher than normal.  Tuesday's statement from the city does not raise the same level of alarm as 2008.

The best key to prevention is simply good hand washing.
