LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - This past week has been a particularly deadly one on Lubbock streets. Three motorcycle riders were killed when their motorcycles collided with much larger vehicles, and a fourth motorcycle enthusiast died from injuries he suffered from a crash several weeks ago.
On top of that, a local woman is in critical condition after she was hit by a truck as she was trying the cross the loop access road near University Avenue.
With the great weather we've had this month, more riders are hitting the streets and the open road.
Motorcycle riders are a fiercely independent bunch. They enjoy the nature of the ride, freedom of the wind in their face, and smelling the trees and freshly cut grass; and for most, these recent deaths will not keep them from that. While I personally wish they would all wear their helmets, that is a discussion for another day.
Consider this: It is my hope that as you go to work or school or shopping this week you will remember to take control of the one thing you can control on the road. Yourself and your vehicle.
Please don't talk on your cell phone, or text or email. Spend your time in your vehicle or motorcycle focusing on the road.
Motorcycle riders are keenly aware of the increased danger they face out there. They watch other drivers probably closer than drivers watch themselves. Because they know that they are the "little guy" and will be the ones most seriously injured.
Please do your part and be alert of what you and what others are doing on the road. We've had enough death.
