LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is scheduled to open a portion of the newly constructed southbound Loop 289 frontage roads to traffic from 16th Street to 19th Street beginning Wednesday.
Motorists will not be able to drive south on the frontage road past 19th Street and will still need to merge with westbound 19th.
The old existing frontage road will be closed and removed. Temporary all-weather roads will be constructed to allow access to 17th Street and local businesses until permanent driveways can be built.
The traffic switch will take place weather permitting and work to rebuild the 19th Street interchange is part of a $17.6 million American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) project. Construction began in April and is expected to improve safety and mobility through the area by replacing the 19th Street clover-leaf interchange configuration with bridges and frontage road, and will widen West Loop from four to six lanes.
