Tuberville has million-dollar impact on TTU giving, records say

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) – How much is Tommy Tuberville worth to Texas Tech fundraising? As of a September 24th open records request by the Fort Worth-based Hodges PR Firm, the answer is $1.25 million.

Tuberville succeeded fired coach Mike Leach this year after Leach was accused of mistreating a player and fired. Leach denies the allegation and filed a lawsuit against Texas Tech.

Charlie Hodges says in a written statement that he provides P.R. services to an anonymous fan of Mike Leach. Hodges was inspired to make the open records request after hearing an ESPN report that Tuberville had a $25 million impact on Texas Tech fundraising.

Texas Tech says in October 14th letter to Hodges that it has no document to back a $25 million claim and does not know where the information came from.

That same letter says "Tommy Tuberville participated in events that raised $500,000 for new practice field turf, $250,000 for locker room updates, and $500,000 for weight room updates."

The open records indicate 34 dates and locations in which Tuberville participated in Texas Tech fundraising, the proceeds of which all went to the athletic department.

Although Hodges might not have intended to discover another significant but distantly related issue, the documents show a huge disparity between the salaries of men's head coaches as compared with women's head coaches.

The documents seem to show that for 2008 head coaches of Texas Tech men's teams make an average of $565,058 while head coaches of women's teams make $173,537. Assistant men's coaches make $133,035 while assistant women's coaches make $64,800.

As an aside, Texas Tech makes one impressive claim in the October 14th letter. It says, "TTU data indicates that approximately $52,000,000 million has been gifted to Texas Tech University during the time period of January 4, 2010 to September 4, 2010."
