Lubbock, TX (KCBD) -  The rain and hail fell fast, forcing police and road crews to block off several intersections in Lubbock which stranded motorists across town.

Severe weather hit the South Plains Thursday evening and as the sun began to set some drivers were not so lucky.

"It started coming in the door," said driver Hal Zingaro who couldn't quite make it through the 2200 block of Erskine.

"If I had gone a little slower might have gone through," added Zingaro who thinks his SUV will be fine once he is able to get the water out.

Almost two and a half feet of water flooded a small car out underneath the bridge over 4th Street between Avenue L and Buddy Holly. TxDOT shut down the road and diverted traffic.  "I've seen a lot of accidents tonight. We are just asking the general public to slow down and put both hands on the wheel in this weather," said Ryan Brown, TxDOT.

Lubbock Wrecker service says it received an "explosion" of calls and was very busy.
