LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Officially there's no word yet on much of Lubbock's biggest cash crop was destroyed Thursday night. The damage assessment continues according to the Plains Cotton Growers web site.
According to that same web site, most of the crop damage was from "northern Yoakum County ... through southern portions of Lubbock County and northwestern Lynn County. This area includes a significant portion of Terry County as well."
Some farmers reported that cotton was completely knocked out of the boll and left on the ground.
The greater Lubbock area had been on track for a record-breaking crop at the same time as near record prices. Will the South Plains still have a bumper crop? As soon as experts figure out the damage, we'll get back to you.
