LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - The Texas Tech student, re-arrested on new charges related to last week's deadly accident at 4th Street and Buddy Holly Avenue, is now out of jail.
Jeena Roberts, 21, bonded out of jail around 2:30 a.m. Friday morning. Authorities re-arrested her Thursday on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. The warrant names the passenger in her own car as the victim. Roberts is also charged with intoxication manslaughter and intoxicated assault for last Friday's crash that killed 54-year-old Linda Smaltz. Investigators say Roberts was drunk and speeding when she rear-ended the SUV Smaltz was riding in.
Smaltz was ejected from the SUV and died from her injuries. According to the affidavit, Roberts told police she went on a field trip to New Mexico with her Texas Tech Petroleum Engineering class before the accident.
She went on to say the professor allowed them to take alcohol on the bus, and that she drank five beers and a shot of liquor on the way back to Lubbock. Smaltz' family has also filed a civil lawsuit against Roberts, her father, and his Houston car dealership claiming negligence.
