Suicidal thoughts linked to acne, not the medication treating it

Posted: Updated:

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) – Although there is an increased risk of thoughts of suicide among those taking the drug Accutane to fight acne, a new study of over 5,000 acne patients taking Accutane indicates suicidal thoughts are more likely due to the acne itself and not the drug.

A close study of the patients on Accutane showed the number of suicide attempts actually increased between one and three years before the treatment started. So, researchers believe suicidal thoughts in the first six months of taking Accutane are more often because while their acne improved, their social life didn't as they had hoped.
