LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) –  Flags all over the Post, Texas area were at half staff today as the community mourned the loss of Trooper Jonathan McDonald.

The Texas Department of Public Safety trooper died, about 10:30 p.m. Monday night in Post in a one-vehicle crash when he was responding to another accident on U.S. Highway 84.

McDonald lost control of his vehicle and struck a culvert. He died instantly and his car was engulfed in flames.

The entire community of Post has taken this incident very hard.

"Its easy to say good things about somebody like him because he was a good person. He was an honest man, he would cover your back, and you could always count on him in a tight situation. You can't say anything more about a man than that," said Garza County Sheriff George Cavitt.

Friends remember him as a man who could light up a room with his presence.

"He could walk in a room and just make you smile, he would make you feel as if you had already known him," said family friend Melissa Morris.

Those who knew him say he was thrilled to work in law enforcement. "He was a young kid, just out of the academy. I remember the excitement and enthusiasm he had for the job," Cavitt said.

Trooper McDonald, 28, joined the DPS in January 2008 and was stationed in Post. Before joining the highway patrol, McDonald worked at a United Supermarket in Lubbock. He is survived by his wife and a six-month-old daughter.

"Every time he was around and working and you needed him, he was there. He is sorely missed," said Cavitt.

Authorities haven't released any details as to what may have caused McDonald to veer off the road and into the center median.

The visitation will be held Thursday, November 18, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Resthaven Memorial Park & Funeral Home, 5740 19th Street (5740 West 19th & West Loop 289), in Lubbock. The funeral home can be reached at 806-791-6200.

Funeral services for Trooper McDonald will be held 2 p.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church, 2201 Broadway, in Lubbock. The burial will be in the Resthaven Cemetery immediately following the service.
