A federal lawsuit claims the Lubbock school district wrongly barred a group from forming a Gay Straight Alliance on campus. The lawsuit was filed Tuesday in Lubbock by Lambda Legal, which is a New York-based national gay rights organization.
Ricky Waite, who graduated from Lubbock High School in May, helped organize the alliance last fall. The suit says the group's application to meet on school premises during non-instructional time was denied in December. The suit also claims the district violated the Equal Access Act, which bars discrimination against groups based on their viewpoints. The suit names Lubbock superintendent Wayne Havens, former Superintendent Jack Clemmons and Assistant Superintendent Fred Hardin.
LISD spokesman Skip Watson says district officials haven't seen the lawsuit and declined comment.
