Shopping locally is encouraged to help Lubbock economy

Posted: Updated:

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Now that holiday shopping is in full swing, Black Friday ending and Cyber Monday in a couple of days, American Express is urging citizens to shop at local stores for Small Business Saturday. American Express is offering 200,000 card-holders a 25 dollar credit if they use their credit cards at a small business.

Local mom and pop stores are excited that American Express has helped dedicate a day for big shopping at local businesses. "I think it's great, I mean this is what America is all about, you know small business is the back bone of America" says Kay Kirpatrick who is the owner of KK's Craft Mall.

"Get out and support them support your local business. We're trying to make it just like anyone else and keep the money here in town and support everyone here," Amy Henry, the owner of Majestic's Kid's Children's Boutique says.

Economists believe that for every 100 dollars spent at a local shop around 68% of the money will stay right here in Lubbock. With the encouragement of spending at local stores, small business hope that Small Business Saturday will be a tradition that continues next year.
