8-Year-Old Lubbock Girl in Critical Condition after Being Hit By SUV

An 8-year-old Lubbock girl remains in critical condition Friday, after she was hit by an SUV late Thursday evening.

Police say just after 8pm, two girls tried to walk their bikes across the 9400 block of University. While one of the girls made it across, the other was hit by an oncoming Chevy Trailblazer. The girl was not wearing a helmet and suffered head trauma and a broken arm.

According to accident investigators, there was little the driver could have done to avoid the crash.

"Kids under ten should not be crossing the street, either on a bike or by themselves," said Karen Slay, of the Injury Prevention Coalition. "They need to be with an adult."

Here are some additional bicycle safety tips for young children:

  • Never ride at dusk or at night
  • Don't forget to look left, right, and left again before crossing the street
  • Walk, don't ride, your bicycle across the street
