LISD To Fight Gay Rights Lawsuit

The LISD Board of Trustees decided Monday morning to fight a lawsuit filed against the district last week.

The lawsuit claims the district violated the Equal Access Act, which bars discrimination against groups based on their viewpoints. Last Fall, the Lubbock High School Principal denied the request of GAP, or the Gay and Proud Group, to post advertisements for its meetings.

LISD School Board President, Mark Griffin said Monday the board strongly supports that decision. "The board met this (Monday) morning in Special Session and the consensus of the trustees was for me as President to direct our legal counsel to file answer and vigorously defend our position in Federal Court," said Griffin.

Griffin also says the district has insurance that will cover costs for defending the lawsuit
