The 28th Annual U Can Share Food Drive kicks off

Posted: Updated:

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) – The 28th Annual U Can Share Food Drive kicks off today with a goal of 500,000 pounds of food and a monetary goal of $100,000. The U Can Share Food Drive is one of the largest food drives on the South Plains. South Plains Food Bank Executive Director David Weaver says that during the season of giving, your donations are needed more than ever.

The food drive will be held from Monday, December 6th through Saturday, December 11th. The main location will be at the United Supermarket at 82nd and Frankford Avenue. If you can't make it out to the location you can always make an online donation or shop the South Plains Food Bank online auction.

This event is a community-wide effort to feed the needy and hungry of Lubbock and the South Plains. U Can Share began as a community service of KCBD NewsChannel 11.

The food and funds collected during the drive help serve the hungry—not only with 5,000 Christmas boxes, with each having enough food to provide a week of nourishing meals for a family of four, but with food boxes well into the new year for families in need.

Here is a list of some of the things SPFB still needs:

  • We need to have 6 more Kids Cafe sites in Lubbock ($5000 to open a new site)
  • We need to expand Kids Cafe to other communities in our service area
  • We need to hire more kids for the summer GRUB program ($2500 for each student)
  • We need 1 additional truck and driver for the mobile pantry program ($75,000)
  • We need a new freezer to store donated frozen food items ($250,000)
  • We need a new cooler at the farm to store the additional fresh vegetables being grown at the farm. ($35,000)
