World's largest snow cone to be built in Lubbock

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) – It will be as tall as a house, as heavy as an 18-wheeler, and it's something you can eat. From December 7th to the 8th Bahama Buck's will attempt to make the world's largest snow cone right here in Lubbock.

"Just had a crazy idea to build the world's largest snow cone," said Blake Buchanan, Bahama Buck's owner. Buchanan created Bahama Buck's in 1990 while a student at Texas Tech, and now they're planning to celebrate the shaved ice favorite with the biggest birthday cake flavored snow cone in the world.

Monday Buchanan and his crew put finishing touches on the "cup" that will hold 4,500 blocks of ice and 14,000 pounds syrup. The cup alone stands 11 feet tall, eight feet in diameter, and 26 feet all the way around.  That's 60,000 times bigger than a regular Bahama Buck's snow cone.

"This thing is insulated just like a cooler would be so it's going to hold the temperature very cold because for it to be a Guinness World Book of Record it's got to be completely edible," said Buchanan.

Once it's all said and done, Buchanan hopes the Bahama Buck's Beast will weigh around 30,000 pounds and tower 16 feet tall.  "We brought in 9,000 pounds of Imperial Pure Cane Sugar just for this event so we really thing this things going to be huge," he said.

Although the original idea was to break the previous world record made in 2000 by Mammoth Mountain Ski Resort in California, Buchanan said the project has become something much bigger.

"All the proceeds will go toward benefiting The Children's Home of Lubbock. These are children who are awaiting families or children who are in foster care," he said "We just wanted to help them out and so we called them our snow angles."

Anyone can take part in breaking the record all you have to do is give a $10 donation. That will get you a block of ice you can shave to be put into the snow cone. The ice shaving will go on from December 7th and 8th from 9AM to 9PM at the Bahama Buck's at 50th and Slide.

On December 9th Bahama Buck's will have the record breaking announcement and community members can stop by to sample the giant snow cone. They'll also be presenting The Children's Home of Lubbock with a check of all the money that was raised.
