LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - The investigation continues into an early morning accident that sent four people to the hospital and police say one is fighting for his life.
Right now, 73-year-old Guadalupe Cortez and his wife Luz are at University Medical Center in critical condition. Police say Guadalupe's injuries are life threatening.
He was the passenger of a 1991 Dodge van. The crash happened around 12:30 Wednesday morning. Accident Investigators say based on initial reports, the driver of the Caviler, Cory Covington, 18, failed to yield the right of way at the intersection of 19th Street and Milwaukee.
The impact of the crash forced the van to roll onto the passenger side and land on its roof.
"The vehicles came into contact causing the van to spin and roll on its top. It's come to light the vehicle did disregard the flashing red light," said Sergeant John Hayes, LPD Accident Investigator.
Police say Covington and his passenger were wearing their seat belts. They were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
Sergeant Hayes says Guadalupe was wearing a seatbelt and they're still looking into whether or not his wife had her seatbelt on. According to the police report, she was partially ejected.
KCBD NewsChannel 11 spoke with Covington's mother and in a message she tells us "Our thoughts and prayers are definitely with them, and have been all night and throughout the morning. My son and I are both seriously devastated. We are praying for a miracle."
Police do not suspect alcohol is a factor; they say this was just a bad accident.
Police are asking everyone to be extra cautious driving at night. There have been 28 fatalities inside Lubbock city limits this year.
