LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - In 2008 the Texas Tech Goin' Band needed new uniforms and the College of Visual and Performing Arts was looking for a way to raise money to buy them. So the school asked retired Texas Tech Musical Coordinator, Anna Henry, for help.
"They said, you sew and you design so could you help us out," Henry said.
The school gave Anna 600 old uniforms, but she started with just making 60 pillows, one for each person who made a large donation to the band uniform replacement fund.
She says most people have a pretty similar reaction when they see her pillows. "That looks like a uniform? So I will go over and say yes that's a band uniform, and they respond, I knew that was a uniform!".
The first 60 pillows that Anna made were all different and unique. "It was sort of a fun challenge to see how many different designs I could come up with, everyone had to have a double T for Texas Tech , some of the braids and buttons as well," Henry said.
Anna says it takes her about 6 hours to make each pillow but its well worth it. "Its a labor of love mostly, the bands special to me, always has been always will be."
