NWS reveals possible cause of massive Hockley Co Fire

Posted: Updated:

HOCKLEY COUNTY, TX (KCBD) - Heavy winds fueled a large grassfire that burned for hours Thursday evening between Whiteface and Levelland. The fire started near highway 114 and Transport Road.

At one point the fire moved east and actually jumped across Farm-to-Market 303. Crews from Levelland, Sundown, Whiteface, and Littlefield all worked to fight the blaze. Hockley County Sheriff's deputies were on the scene for a few hours directing traffic. Due to the intensity of the fire, it was detected on the weather radar.  Estimates on the size of the fire ranged from 1,500 acres to 2,000 acres.

The National Weather Service said the wind blew over a power pole and that might have been the cause of the fire.  No injuries were reported.
