South Plains counties under Fire Weather Warning

Posted: Updated:

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Lubbock and nearly all South Plains counties are under a Fire Weather Warning, also referred to as a Red Flag Warning, until 5 PM this afternoon. A Fire Weather Warning means the area can expect winds in excess of 20 mph and relative humidity below 15 percent for three or more hours. This results in a very high wildfire danger in spite of cooler temperatures. Conditions will improve late this afternoon as winds begin to diminish.

This afternoon winds from the southwest will be sustained in the 25 to 35 mph range with gusts from 40 to 50 mph anticipated.

Local counties included in the warning area are BRISCOE HALL CHILDRESS FLOYD MOTLEY COTTLE LUBBOCK CROSBY DICKENS KING LYNN GARZA and KENT.

Also, the strong winds will cause blowing dust. Travel could become hazardous due to locally reduced visibility in dust. High profile vehicles may experience strong crosswinds.
