LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) –  Lubbock County's Emergency Management Coordinator canceled plans for warming centers late Friday afternoon.  Clinton Thetford says South Plains Electric Cooperative customers lost power east of Shallowater just before noon.  According to the Lubbock chapter of the Red Cross, it was 1,000 customers without power.  The Red Cross was on standby to help Emergency Management.

Furnaces and electric heaters do not work without electricity; with high winds and temperatures in the 30's and 40's there was concern for public safety.

At 3:30 PM Thetford says he got word from SPEC that they found the problem.  It was a short in the power line that runs east & west along 1294, 8 miles long east of Shallowater.

Theftford says SPEC planned on having the problem solved by 4:00 PM.  In the event that power is not restored, Thetford says the county is prepared to quickly resume plans for two warming centers.
