When the sun sets Friday night, thousands of luminaries will light up the Monterey High School track to memorialize or pay tribute to friends and family in the fight against cancer. The event, called "Relay for Life," raised more than $100,000 last year. So, organizers this year are shooting for $130,000.
Pete Stone, a member of the American Cancer Society Board, says that this fundraiser is so important to our community. He says that there is hardly anyone in this community, in this country who hasn't been touched by cancer. He's lost several friends and relatives and everything that is done is closer to a cure.
You can purchase luminaries for $10 in memory or in honor of someone fighting cancer. Just call the American Cancer Society at (806) 792-7126 . They can tell you more about walking in that relay that continues all night Friday with lots of entertainment and activities until closing ceremonies at 6 a.m. Saturday.
