LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) – Responding to a late-December open records request on Tuesday, Texas Tech released the termination letter pertaining to the dismissal of the football team's Defensive Coordinator, James Willis.

It is a one sentence memo signed by Football Head Coach Tommy Tuberville. It says, "Coach James Willis has been dismissed from Texas Tech and removed from all coaching duties and responsibilities as of 12/25/2010."

Previous statements from Texas Tech indicated that Willis left to pursue other career opportunities.

Meanwhile court records indicate that Willis turned himself in to the Lubbock County jail on January 5th. He has been charged with a misdemeanor count of domestic violence.

News of the domestic violence became public shortly after Willis' dismissal. Willis was investigated by Wolfforth police for an incident on December 22nd.

In the days that followed the dismissal, Coach Tuberville said that the issue of domestic violence never came up in his discussions with Willis. An email from Texas Tech seems to corroborate Tuberville's statement.

When asked for any memos, emails, police reports or other documents pertaining to the Wolfforth investigation, the university said, "Texas Tech has no records responsive to your request."

Willis was able to get out of jail by posting a $2,500 bond.  His attorney, Dub Wade, declined a chance to comment at this time.

In late December Wolfforth police said that there no serious injuries in the domestic violence incident that they investigated at Willis' home.
