IDALOU, TX (KCBD) - It didn't take long for Idalou to find a replacement for longtime head coach Johnny Taylor as Don Long was approved to take over the Wildcats football program by the Idalou school board Thursday night.

Like Taylor, Long has been at Idalou for 22 years and after this State Championship season when Taylor announced his retirement, he wanted Long to get the head job.

"I don't think you fill the shoes of Johnny Taylor and I'm not going to try to fill the shoes of Johnny Taylor." Long told KCBD Newschannel 11 Sports Director Pete Christy. "It's going to be real different not having him walking the sidelines with us."

Idalou won the 2A State Championship in December beating Lexington 20-3. As the defensive coordinator, Long had the Wildcats tenacious D shutting down opponents week in and week out .

Taking over the head spot, Long is now in a unique position." It's not often you get to inherit a State Championship team so I'm looking forward to the challenge."

Long says the Idalou Wildcats will carry on with what they've been doing and keep things the same and try to keep being successful.
