New Mexico authorities says Human body discovered in freezer Monday

Carlsbad, NM (KCBD) - A human body was found Monday in Carlsbad, New Mexico when two people where cleaning out a home of a deceased relative.

The two cleaners loaded the freezer into a pickup and drove it to the Carlsbad Police Department.

According to a news release from the Eddy County Sheriff's Department, the body was found around 7:50 p.m. in a chest-type freezer. At first, investigators thought the remains belonged to an animal, but later determined that they were human.

The case was later turned over to the Sheriff's Department because the body was found outside of the city limits. The Eddy County Special Investigations Unit was called to begin the investigation.

The name of the victim has not been released, but a source close to the investigation has said it may be the husband of the deceased occupant. He was reported missing in 1997.

The body is at the Medical Investigators Office in Albuquerque for an autopsy.
