LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Workers permanently set the Buddy Holly statue in its new home Wednesday; the Buddy and Maria Elena Holly Plaza next door to the Buddy Holly Center. While the statue is now permanently set, it still must remain temporarily covered by a canvass to protect if from dust and dirt while construction of the Plaza continues.
"It won't be up for public viewing until construction is done," said City Councilman Paul Beane. Beane expects the grand opening of the Plaza will this spring. Beane says plaster and stone work should be done by this weekend and that only leaves the sidewalks, grass, and trees.
The Buddy Holly statue had been displayed previously at 8th and Avenue Q. But it was moved as part of a deal with Maria Elena Holly to use the Holly name on the Buddy Holly Center, and the City's desire to use the Buddy Holly Center in much the same way as a visitor center.
The statue had suffered damage over the years. For example, some of the tuning screws on the guitar were broken. The statue was refurbished and it may have a slightly different color once it is unveiled to the public.
"It was covered in bowling alley wax," Beane said. That means the patina has been replaced with a shinier look, Beane says.
Beane also credits the city's Parks and Recreation Department for doing the design of the Plaza in-house rather than the city spending money on outside firm.
