Lady Raiders drop third-straight game

LUBBOCK, Texas – No. 25 Texas Tech suffered its third-straight loss by losing to Texas, 75-67, Wednesday night at the United Spirit Arena.

It was the third-straight game that the Lady Raiders had led at halftime, but came up short in the end.

Texas (13-7/2-4 Big 12) opened the game scoring the first five points before Tech (16-4/3-3 Big 12) responded by scoring six-straight points.

The first half had seven lead changes with five coming in the first six and a half minutes. With 13:25 left in the first period Casey Morris nailed a three-pointer to put Tech up 17-15, a lead it would keep for almost 11 minutes of play.

At the 10:46 mark, Tech got is biggest lead of the game of eight points at 23-15 as Christine Hyde made a short jumper.

Ashleigh Fontenette made a layup for Texas at 2:44 to take back the lead, 31-30. However, Tech came right back with a jumper by Teena Wickett to get the last lead change of the half.

Tech led 38-31 at the half after Brown hit a jumper with 36 seconds remaining.

The second half belonged to the Longhorns as they went on a 11-3 run the first four and half minutes to take back the lead at 44-41 on a three-pointer by Kathleen Nash.

The Lady Raiders got the lead back twice during the second half, the first time at 13:05, 47-46, on a jumper by Hyde and then again at 11:46, 50-49, on a pair of free throws by Jordan Barncastle.

Tiffany Moore made a jumper at 11:22 to give the Longhorns a 51-50 advantage, which was the last lead change of the game. Texas got up by as many as eight points three times with the first time coming just over five minutes to play when Chassidy Fussell sank a three-pointer.

Tech got within one twice in the last 2:18 to play, including a jumper by Kelsi Baker with 1:40 go to cut Texas' lead to 66-65. However, just as the shot clock was about to expire, Fussell hit an off-balance three to put the Horns up 69-65 with 1:04 remaining and the Lady Raiders would not get any closer as Texas went on to claim the eight-point win.

The Lady Raiders had four players in double figures led by Morris with 13. Kierra Mallard added 12 while Wickett and Brown both finished with 10. Christine Hyde grabbed six rebounds.

Fussell scored a game-high 22 points to lead Texas.

The Longhorns shot 48.3 percent (28-58) from the field for the game, including 60 percent the second half, while Tech shot 42.2 percent (27-64).

Texas out rebounded Tech 43-26.

The Lady Raiders committed a season-low seven turnovers to the Longhorns' 16.

Tech returns to action on Sat., Jan. 29, with a game at Nebraska. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
