Texas Tech Men's Tennis Hosts ITA Kick-Off Weekend

LUBBOCK (KCBD)- The 15th-ranked Texas Tech men's tennis team begins the 2011 dual season at the McLeod Tennis Center against No. 45 LSU on Saturday at 12 p.m. as part of the third annual ITA Kick-off weekend with Auburn meeting California at 3 p.m.

The Red Raiders (2-0) opened their dual season last weekend in Las Vegas with wins over No. 55 UC-Irvine and No. 66 UNLV. This weekend marks the first dual match action for the LSU Tigers.

"I am really pleased Texas Tech is hosting three nationally ranked teams for the ITA Kick-Off Weekend", stated Red Raider head coach Tim Siegel. "Tennis fans will be able to watch some very good tennis on Saturday and Sunday. Each team will have two very good matches this weekend."

Texas Tech, one of only 15 national hosts, welcomes LSU, Auburn, and California to the McLeod Tennis Center for the 2011 ITA Division 1 Kick-Off Weekend. The 15 schools that win both of their matches at these events will be invited to play in the Feb. 18-21 ITA National Team Indoor Championship hosted by the University of Washington.

Several highly ranked players will be at the McLeod Tennis Center this weekend for the four teams, including Texas Tech's Gonzalo Escobar, who is currently ranked 20th in the nation in singles, Cal's No. 50 Christoffer Konigsfeldt, Cal's No. 59 Carlos Cueto, Auburn's No. 65 Tim Hewitt, and LSU's No. 120 Riki McLachlan.

In doubles, Cal has the No. 13 duo of Christoffer Konigsfeldt and Nick Andrews plus No. 17 ranked Carlos Cueto and Jonathan Dahan. LSU features the No. 27 duo of Sebastian Carlsson and Neal Skupski. Texas Tech highlights double play with No. 39 Gonzalo Escobar and Rafael Garcia.
