Lubbock Atmos employees lending a hand in New Mexico

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Our neighbors to the west have also been hard hit by the recent cold. In New Mexico 40,000 people are without natural gas.

Atmos Energy is sending people to help. ATMOS is sending 30 employees to New Mexico on Friday. "What they have to do is they have to go to each one of these homes and businesses that has lost power, lost their gas service, and they have to make sure those meters are turned off, and once all those meters are turned off, they can re-pressurize the system and make sure everything's safe on it, then they'll go back to each home and business and have to manually turn on the meters." says, Marinda Heinrich spokesperson for Atmos Energy.

The issue in New Mexico was not a lack of gas. It was a lack of electricity to pump the gas through the lines and keep the pressure up. Restoring gas takes much longer than restoring electricity due to safety issues.
