Several agencies are looking into death of Brownfield elderly man

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) – Several agencies are now looking into how a 71-year old nursing home resident died. Staff at the Tumbleweed Nursing Home in Brownfield found Willie Byers body outside early Thursday morning.

Police say surveillance cameras caught Byers walking outside the facility in the below freezing temperatures around 4:15 Thursday morning, the Texas Department of Aging has opened its own investigation into the facility. The death of Byers has been declared declared I-J, which means the health and safety of individuals there are in immediate jeopardy.

Byer's nephew, Deion Mitchell wants to know how his uncle was able to get out of the facility," He's an Alzheimer patient with dementia so you definitely have to keep an eye on him knowing he's a wanderer; the last image I have is him laying on a table with cuts on his head frozen."

Autopsy results have not been released yet. Management at the Tumbleweed facility says this matter is still under investigation. A full report from the state is expected in the coming weeks.
