Head-on crash kills 5 in Andrews County

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) – Five people are dead after a tragic head on crash in Andrews County.

The accident happened around 1:30 Saturday afternoon on FM 1788 north of Highway 158. DPS troopers say Deborah Beck, of Andrews, drifted into on-coming traffic and hit a dump truck. Both vehicles immediately caught fire. 

"The vehicle drifted into the northbound lane and was struck head on by the truck and it drug it for a few hundred feet," Trooper John Barton, with the Texas Department of Public Safety, said.

Beck's three grandchildren ages 8, 3 and 2 who were in her Volkswagen also died.

The driver of the truck that Beck hit, 56-year old Edwin Timmer, was also killed. Beck was following her son and daughter-in-law when the crash happened.

A crisis intervention team was called to the scene to help the family.
