LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - One man is in very critical condition after police say the SUV he was driving collided with a city of Lubbock sand truck out on patrol Monday morning.
Lubbock police department accident investigators were called out to the scene of the crash at 82nd Street and the north bound I-27 access road. It happened around 2:45 a.m. and the accident shut down the intersection for nearly two hours.
Firefighters had to cut Benny Flores, 41, out of the his SUV. AeroCare transported Flores to University Medical Center.
After conducting a preliminary investigation on the scene, officers believe the driver of the SUV ran a red light going north bound on the access road and struck the sand truck that was headed east bound on 82nd Street.
Police say Edward Merritt, who was working his shift sanding intersections, was not injured and had the green light.
Accident investigators are looking at several contributing factors including black ice, alcohol and speed.
