LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) –  Lubbock police say a family is safe after an early morning wreck because they were wearing their seat belts. Their red SUV hit a patch of black ice and landed on its roof in the Burger King parking lot near University and the South Loop.

Officers on the scene tell KCBD that the driver of a Chevy Blazer hit a patch of black ice in the south bound lane of University closest to the side walk. The driver lost control and hit the curb. The SUV landed in the Burger King parking lot in the 7000 block of University.

The accident caused a chain reaction of other accidents in the parking lot. Multiple patrol officers were called to the scene and so were Lubbock firefighters.

Lubbock police urge drivers to be careful when the threat of black ice exists.
