Dry conditions and high winds made for a busy day for area firefighters

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) –  Dry conditions and high winds made for a busy day for area firefighters. A fast-moving grass fire near Wolfforth shut down a portion of FM 179 just before 3:45 Sunday afternoon.

The fire sparked in the grass north of 114th. Due to the intensity of the fire, the fire was said to be taller than some of the tree tops in the area. Neighbors were spaying down their yards and homes in case the blaze got to the property. Firefighters say at least one structure was damaged by the fire.

The Wolfforth Police Department blocked off portion of FM 179 because driving conditions were being compromised because of the thickness of the smoke crossing the roadway.

There will be rain late Friday and early Saturday, though it is unlikely there will be measurable rainfall during the day Friday (but a few light showers may occur). The best chance of rain and storms – still – is Friday evening through Saturday morning.
