University of Michigan surgeons say an auditory brain implant, or ABI can stimulate the brain stem and replace the function of the inner ear. The ABI's electrode is placed on the surface of the brain stem over the cochlear nucleus. While results are not perfect, about 80% of the ABI procedures are successful.
