In three more days Lubbock will have it's first drive in movie theater in almost 20 years. It's called the 'Stars and Stripes Drive-In' and it's located just west of Lubbock on Highway 84. Right now workers are very busy making last minute preparations for opening night.
Not only are they making last minute preparations for Thursday on Monday night more than 200 people have been invited for a private viewing on the brand new big screens of the Stars and Stripes Drive-In.
Chaos. Co-Owner Ryan Smith of the Stars and Stripes is putting together the last minute touches. "I've got my Coca Cola guys here, ice machine and our popcorn popper right over here," Smith says as he's showing us around. What's a movie without popcorn right? Movie projector, check. And a full kitchen that Smith says will be ready.
So why in the world would Ryan Smith want to take on a big project like this? "I didn't like law school," says Smith. That's right. He was a law student at Southern Methodist University living in Dallas, Smith quit. Packed his bags to move to west Texas. And now he says he's doing something he really loves. The drive-in.
"It's a big thing in my family and so I got to thinking, Lubbock seems like a good opportunity here," he said. And Smith took that dive into the deep end, knowing he can stay on top. West Texas, the Stars and Stripes, and a place he'll now call home.
Monday's showing is for private invitations only. Opening night for the public will be Thursday August 21st.
