LUBBOCK, TX (Press Release) - Dr. E. Joe Sasin, medical director of the UMC Emergency Center and UMC Lubbock EMS, has been voted by employees and physicians as UMC's 2010 Physician of the Year. Dr. Sasin has served UMC's patients for 20 years and held his current position for six.

"As much of a privilege as that is, another level of job satisfaction comes from the relationships that I have developed with colleagues, nursing staff, ancillary services and administration," Dr. Sasin said. "It was a wonderful honor being awarded the Physician of the Year, and since that is voted by the UMC employees I want to express my gratitude to all."

In the past year, Dr. Sasin helped lead the transition into UMC's expanded EC facility. Today the EC has 64 patient rooms, a dedicated pediatric area and capacity to serve 100,000 patients a year.

"Dr. Sasin works tirelessly to continue to make the EC the best place that it can be," said John Parsons, Emergency Center director. "Over the last two years we have doubled the size of the EC and it has brought many challenges to work through. All that time, however, he has been a great leader, not only making the EC more efficient, but also ensuring our patients are satisfied with the service they receive."

The award is chosen from the previous year's Physicians of the Month. These are physicians who treat patients with compassion and respect, excel in service, show commitment to teamwork and leadership and provide unsurpassed health care.

UMC Health System is the leader in comprehensive healthcare delivery in West Texas and Eastern New Mexico. Founded in 1978, it is home to the region's only Level I Trauma Center, the Timothy J. Harnar Burn Center, the UMC Heart Center, the UMC Southwest Cancer Treatment and Research Center and the UMC Children's Hospital.
