Tech Softball Rebounds to Beat St. John's 19-8

LUBBOCK (KCBD) – No. 19 Texas Tech erased an early five-run deficit with 17 runs over the third and fourth innings to rout St. John's, 19-8, Saturday afternoon in the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic at Rocky Johnson Field.

Despite the 19 runs for Tech, St. John's controlled the game's early momentum, scoring two runs in the first and another three in the second thanks to a Myriah Rodgers three-run home run to left field.

Raven Richardson got the Tech offense going in the second inning with a two-run shot to left field, pulling the Red Raiders to a 5-2 deficit. Tech put two more runners on in the inning but could not cut further into St. John's lead.

After Karli Merlich shut the Red Storm down in the third, Logan Hall crushed the first of two home runs in the inning, tying the game at five runs with a three-run shot. Hall followed with a grand slam later in the inning as she finished with seven RBIs in the game for the second-consecutive day, one shy of the school record.

Cydney Allen added Tech's third home run of the game in the fourth with a three-run shot to left field that was part of a six-run inning for the Red Raiders. Taylor Powell took the very next pitch deep to center field for the freshman's first career home run.

St. John's cut the lead to 19-8 in the fifth after Rodgers hit her second home run of the game, this time going to deep center field.

Merlich earned the win for Tech after pitching 3.1 innings in relief of Ashley Brokeshoulder. The win was the first of the year for Merlich (1-0). Brokeshoulder had her roughest outing of the year, giving up five runs off six hits in just over an inning worked.

Kat Lawrence (4-2) took the loss for St. John's as she went two innings while allowing seven runs off four hits while issuing six walks. She was one of four St. John's pitchers in the game.

The loss was the second of the day for St. John's as the Red Storm fell earlier in the day to Wichita State, 10-6. Wichita State dropped the morning game to Northern Illinois, 6-4, as well.
