MATADOR, TX (KCBD) - According to the National Weather Service, satellite imagery showed late Sunday afternoon that a massive wildfire was quickly approaching the City of Matador, more than an hour's drive northeast of Lubbock. The NWS says this fire poses a grave threat to life and property in Matador. Mandatory evacuations have been issued.
Just after 5 PM Texas Fire Service reported that numerous outbuildings & sheds have burned in the immediate Matador vicinity, including homes. A second wave of fire was expected to impact Matador during the 5 PM hour. Officials described it as "a very dangerous situation."
According to the Associated Press, other evacuations were being ordered for the southeastern section of Borger and the River Falls and Willow Creek areas near Canyon in the Panhandle.
The Salvation Army said Sunday that it is responding to Matador. Lubbock-area volunteers will take the Salvation Army's Rapid Response Unit to provide dinner to more than 120 victims and emergency workers Sunday evening.
