HOCKLEY COUNTY, TX (KCBD) - A fire in Hockley County near Levelland was 100% contained by 5:30 PM Sunday according to the National Weather Service.

Fire departments from Levelland, Smyer, Whiteface, Sundown, and West Carlisle battled flames for more than 4 hours Sunday in Hockley County.

Levelland emergency management coordinator Ted Holder told us at least 2 homes were destroyed by the fire along with nearly 5,000 acres. The fire spread along the west side of Levelland near FM 300.

Holder says the weather was the biggest obstacle in putting out this fire. "Of course we had a lot of wind and the fire was jumping roads and everything," he said.

Even construction crews helped slow down the flames by piling up dirt to prevent the grass fires from spreading. Visibility was near zero and was another challenge for fire fighters.

Crews were also concerned with the wind knocking down power lines and causing more damage. Holder tells us there were no reports of any injuries. They also hope to determine a cause of the fire sometime tomorrow.
