Memorial race helps two families

Posted: Updated:

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD)- Saturday nearly three hundred people gathered in Post for a 5K run in honor of Trooper Jon McDonald who died in the line of duty back in November. All of the proceeds from Saturday's event will go to a family friend of the McDonalds'. The Bigham's daughter, Brynne, is fighting a rare disease, and with that a mound of hospital bills.

State Representative Jim Landtroop delivered a special gift from Austin: "I just presented Laura with a flag that was flown over the capital in memory of Jon for his service to the state of Texas and the people of Garza County."

Trooper McDonald's wife, Laura walked the race side by side with her dear friend Maggie Bigham. "After Jon passed away Laura and I have been support for each other in a lot of different things… we are body builders in our own way" Maggie says.

The weight the two women carry requires more than muscles, and Laura is using the proceeds from her husband's memorial run to help ease her friend's burden. Maggie's daughter, Brynne, has an unknown digestive disorder and spends 14 hours a day hooked up to tubes so her body can process nutrients. "Her body does not know what to do with food" Maggie explains.

There were more than 22 sponsors from Texas to New Mexico and nearly three hundred people gathered to honor Trooper McDonald and raise money for Brynne. "That even somebody would want to honor Jon in that way and that we could just be a small part of that and we are just amazed and humbled at how God has truly bless us" Maggie says.

The first ever Trooper McDonald Memorial Race raised well over $8,000 for the Bighams'.
