Hit and Run Accident Leaves One in Critical Condition

A Lubbock man is fighting for his life Thursday, after being hit by an alleged drunk driver.

Just before midnight, Brett Walrath was riding his bike along a South Loop 289 access road when he was hit by one car and then run over by a second car.

At 11:30 Wednesday night, two men were riding their bikes on the South Loop 289 access road eastbound between Indiana and Quaker. According to the police report they were in the left shoulder when the bicyclist in front noticed a car approaching.

Moments later the driver of a 4-door Lexus sedan ran into 29-year-old Brett Walrath, the rider on the second bike. The car didn't stop, driving away from the scene, but things only got worse. A crowd of people formed, trying to assist, when the driver of a red Jeep swerved to miss them, but ran over Walrath.

Walrath was transported to University Medical Center with critical injuries. The driver of the Lexus, 62-year-old Callie Long was arrested just blocks away near 73rd and Memphis. She was later charged with intoxicated assault. Her bond was set at $75,000, but she's since bonded out of jail.

Walrath had surgery Thursday morning and as of  Thursday evening he remains in critical condition. The driver of the Jeep, Dudley Winn, will not be charged.
