LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) – For the second straight season, the Idalou boys basketball team will play for the 2A State Title as they edged Halletsville 75-64 in overtime in a State Semifinal contest early Friday morning in Austin.
Playing at an especially early time of 8:30am didn't slow down Idalou, who came out strong. Last year the Wildcats played an 8:30am State Semifinal game and they stunned #1 New Waverly, but lost in the title game to Ponder.
Second time around, the Wildcats opened up a 19-10 lead after 1 quarter and kept a 9 point margin at half 36 to 27.
Riley Payne, who scored 28 points, picked up his 4th foul in the third quarter and Idalou turned the ball over 10 times as the Brahamas trailed by only 8 after 3.
Idalou missed 10 free throws, many in 4th quarter allowing Halletsville to force overtime.
In the extra session, the Wildcats hit their free throws, including 2 on a technical foul called on Halletsville's bench, breaking open a 62-62 game, en route to an 11 point win.
Now 32-1, winners of 29 straight, Idalou moves into Saturday morning's State Championship game.
With the Wildcat football team capturing the State title in December, Idalou has a chance to be just the 5th school in any classification to win the football and basketball State titles in the same school year.
Monday night, the football team received the bling bling of a state title ring during a ceremony at the school. No doubt, that pumped up the Wildcat hoop squad, who are 1 win away from getting their own snazzy hardware.
1 other area team, Paducah, guided by former Brownfield Coach Jay Cantrell, meets Waelder at 2pm in the 1A Div II State Semifinals.
KCBD NewsChannel 11 will have complete coverage of Idalou and Paducah with highlights and postgame reaction tonight on the News at 6 and 10.
