Paducah wins state

AUSTIN, TX (KCBD) – Cold shooting plagued both teams in the 1A Division 2 State Title Game, but the #3 Paducah Dragons were on fire in the 2nd half pulling away to knock off #1 Bronte 45 to 30 in Austin.

Paducah led 17 to 15 at half as both teams shot around 20 percent from the floor. The Dragons  shot 6 for 28 while the Longhorns were 5 of 25.

Paducah outscored Bronte 19 to 7 in third to open up a 14 point lead entering the 4th. Bronte never scored double digits in any quarter.

Paducah coached by former Brownfield Coach Jay Cantrell, were led by Andrew Hastings who scored 19 points.

The State Championship is the first in 23 years for Paducah. In 1988, a future Red Raider and Wayland Baptist Flying Queens coach Will Flemmons led the Dragons to the 1A Title beating Big Sandy 99 to 61.

Paducah joins Idalou who edged Tatum 55 to 54 as the only area boys teams to wins State Basketball titles in Austin in 2011. Smyer was the lone area girls team to win a State Championship last week.
