MADD Donates Equipment To Aid In Investigation Of Drunk Driving Cases

Most late model cars are equipped with a data recorder, similar to "black boxes" found in airplanes. The device stores information about the vehicle at the time of impact... Such as vehicle speed, whether or not seat belts were used, or brakes applied.

On Thursday, MADD donated the necessary equipment to extract all that information from those boxes. "We're trying to get the word out to other prosecutors and other Sheriff's offices and Police Departments, that we do have this capability. And this is a cooperative effort between us and MADD. MADD supplied the technology and equipment, we're supplying the expertise," said Todd Smith, Chief Investigator, Lubbock County District Attorney's Office.

The Lubbock, South Plains MADD Chapter is the first in the country to purchase this equipment.
