Local non-profit gives out free prom dresses for Lubbock teens

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) – It's a fairy tale come true for dozens of teenage girls in Lubbock, as a local non-profit handed out prom dresses for those who couldn't afford new ones. Saturday the Bridge of Lubbock and Tammie's Closet hosted their first annual "Project Prom" letting girls shop for free for their special day.

"It just blossomed into so many dresses everywhere. Girls are coming in and they're so excited; the smiles on their faces…it's just amazing," said Mayda Cruz, Bridge of Lubbock executive director.

More than 400 prom dresses, shoes and accessories filled two rooms as more than a dozen bright eyed teen girls shopped for the perfect dress. "I was excited and anxious because I really didn't know if I was going to find the right dress. It turns out that I did," said Kendall Victor with a smile.

It took a little less than an hour for Kendall to spot the perfect dress for her eighth grade banquet; a long formal black and white gown that tied up the back with a white silk ribbon. "We tried on a lot of dresses," she said. "But I finally found one and I think it's perfect!"

From formal gowns to short sassy dresses, the girls picked out the dress they fell in love with. Then volunteers helped size them up to get fitted and helped pick out the finishing touches with jewelry, shoes and purses.

"Businesses like Accessory Touch and Dusty's, and Fabric Care have come out.  Then ladies have come out to freely give their time to alter the dresses should the girls need it," said Cruz. "It's just amazing with the outpouring of love and support we've been getting for the young ladies in the community."

The idea of "Project Prom" started about a month ago as the Bridge of Lubbock began collecting dressing and accessories with the goal to give every young lady in Lubbock the chance to go to prom.

"It's an opportunity for them to feel really special and get decked out. There are a lot of people here who want them to feel special, so I think they're just really overjoyed and overwhelmed by the whole experience," said Cruz.

The Bridge of Lubbock will hold another dress give away next Saturday, April 2nd from 11a.m. to 3 p.m. If you are in need of a dress for a special occasion just call Tammie Johnson at 806-441-6527 to set up an appointment.

The Bridge is also offering free hair, make-up, nail painting and photos the day of prom.
