Lubbock firefighter believed dead after plane crash

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

More than one person is dead after a plane crash on private ranch land near County Road 142 and County Road 129 in Dickens County.  The crash site is in a ravine about five miles northwest of Dickens.

The wreckage was discovered about 1:00 PM Sunday and officials think the plane may have crashed Saturday night or early Sunday morning.  The plane was burned and still smoldering when a witness called it in.

Although officials at the scene did not release names of the victims, it is confirmed that that the plane is owned by a Lubbock Firefighter, Jake Jenkins.

"Our sincerest condolences and heartfelt prayers go out to the family of Equipment Operator Jake Jenkins who was killed in a plane crash this [Sunday] morning." the Lubbock Professional Fire Fighters Association said just before Midnight Sunday on its web site.

"He was an incredibly talented individual. We miss you, brother."

DPS Corporal John Gonzalez says the plane is believed to have taken off close to the site.  Officials say updates will be delayed because cell phone reception is almost non-existent at the crash site.
